We did it yall! Another year in the books, and what a year it has been. Music has made as much of an impact in 2014 than in any other time in the culture. Whether it was seeing youngsters like Bobby Shmurda and Dej Loaf rocket to notoriety with their respective street anthems, or watching established artists like Beyonce and Jay Z take the world by storm with their well publicized ‘On The Run‘ tour, or even being one of the 300 million people to witness Nicki Minaj “break the internet,” this year was full of moments that kept us talking, singing along, or jaw dropping. With the web continuing to play such a large part in how we discovered, shared, and critiqued new music this year, it made sense to us at 1200squad to show homage and pay respect to the internet DJs; the guys who tend to pick up on what’s heating up online before it even winds up on your favorite station. So, in keeping up with discovering new music and honoring those that do it best, we head to NYC and check in with the premier DJ at PNCRadio.fm – DJ Vega Benetton.

Born and raised in The Big Apple, Vega Benetton has been a staple in the NYC mix-tape and club scene for well over a decade. Getting his start at St. John‘s University radio station WSJU, Benetton quickly made a name for himself DJ‘ing parties around campus and in the city. Enough so that his skills carried him to BET, the United Nations, performing with such legendary DJs as: DJ Marley Marl, Pete Rock, and DJ Premier.  Benetton boasts a celebrity clientele that includes such A-listers as: Derek Jeter, Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas. Today Benetton continues to progress in his craft. You can catch Vega on the turntables, or interviewing your favorite artist on his show “The Pre-Game Show” on PNCRadio.fm, where he also serves as executive producer for their mixtape series.

For this month‘s final mix we look back on all the records that made an impact on us this year, 2014. Vega Benetton touches some of our favorite records from several of our favorite artists this year including: Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean and Troy Ave.  This month, our Music Meeting takes a look forward with new records you should be looking out for at the top of the year, including songs from Bodega Bamz, Schoolboy Q and Young Memph.

We here at 1200squad hope that this year has been a memorable one for you. During the holidays this year, lets all try to look back and give thanks for some of the great music moments of the year, and lets be hopeful for what 2015 has to offer. Who will rule in the new year? Who will fade away? We don’t know the answers to that yet, but we can assure you, as the year unfolds you can be sure we‘ll be there to cover it all on 1200squad.com.  Have a safe and Happy Holiday, and remember, the DJ is the Cornerstone of Hip-Hop.®
